I always get a bit nervy when our theme content doesn’t include the wargaming ‘big three’ of Ancients, Napoleonics and World War Two, and in truth we could have crowbarred articles on all of these subjects into our ‘Bush Wars’ theme, but we decided to embrace the eclectic in the form of The Ten Years War in Cuba, The American-Philippino War, The Third Ashanti War, The Malayan Emergency and The Second Chimurenga, as well as our lead article in which we discuss wargaming with ‘hearts and minds’. In this, and last month’s issue, we have featured ‘Designer’s Showcase’ articles - a cunning combination of our regular ‘Designer’s Notes’ and ‘Rules Showcase’ features - in which the designer of the game (or in this month’s case supplement) has showcaseed their rules for us. For this issue we invited Roger Gerrish down to WIHQ to play though a game of his Bolt Action Western Desert supplement, highlighting some of the new rules therein. If you are viewing the Interactive version of this magazine you can also see an interview with Roger in which you will hear his thoughts in technicolour (...?). OBSERVATION POST A look at what we ‘Spotted At’ The Other Partizan, plus special focus on Anno Domini 1666. THEME: WINNING HEARTSAND MINDS Pete Brown provides some thoughts on adding rule mechanics for winning hearts and minds to your Bush Wars games and campaigns.
