Take a tour through the Vault and read some classic Wi articles. We've ground our way through the previous year's struggles and emerged into the greener pastures of hope and potential that they call 2023. Hurrah! The yearly reset, along with the downtime that the Christmas holidays provide, tends to give our minds a chance to wander; during those journeys, the seeds for new wargaming projects get planted. As 2023 goes on I hope your ideas blossom beautifully as you nurture them but I know how easy it is for army and terrain ideas to wilt away, suffocated by the weeds of distractions life brings. With that in mind, while we are buoyed by the new year's accompanying inspiration, let's pour some Miracle-Gro - Wi style - onto our hobby sproutlings. Here are some inspirational articles from The Vault to keep us motivated: Wargames Illustrated 326 - December 2014 All about altitude A great way to add interest to your wargaming is by bringing height advantages to the tabletops you play over. Verticality is often ignored when we play, in part because of our limited terrain collections, but maybe 2023 is the year to change that. Take a peek at this issue to see all kinds of inspirational ideas: battles, photos, tactics, and rules modifications. Pete Brown opens things with his 'Take the High Ground' overview article, chariot expert Nigel Stillman throws them into mountain campaigns, Robert Giglio covers Wolseley's attack on Sekhukhune's Stronghold in 'The Fighting Koppie', and James Morris plays the British attack on Fort Dologorodoc. The last two articles here have particularly beautiful terrain on show and we defy you to glance over the gaming pictures and not feel inspired to build some cliffs or hills of your own. Thankfully Nick Buxey's on hand with 'It's a Butte' where he presents modelling tips for making Monument Valley that can be transferred to many other regions. Moving onto flatter ground there's a look at Derby Wargamers' spectacular '1914 on the Western Front' boards. The French and British take on the Germans in some outstanding-looking terrain presented as a pictorial piece that will inspire. Wargames Illustrated 234 - April 2007 Digging in the crates Going further back in time through the Wi archive can bring more unpredictable image results but there's some truly great stuff in our older issues. I typed this year and added a 4 to get to Wi234 in the Vault's search field and it presented me with some outstanding wargaming imagery: Siege action from Dave Bodley of Grand Manner, vibrant Middle East miniatures from Michael Perry, cinematic shots of the war in Burma during WWII, and a masterclass on building Viking longships from Glen Cooley
