It’s August, it’s cooling down enough in the UK for us to brave trips into the Wi basement where our gaming table lives (so too do many terrible things that we can’t mention here), and we’ve got a gaming theme to this month’s From the Vault, inspired by the new Lion Rampant. Wargames Illustrated 358 - August 2017 This issue’s cover is a break from the normal dramatic artwork we show, instead displaying a still from 2017’s movie Dunkirk (with plenty of drama present). Our August 2017 issue covers this famous retreat as its theme and gets some regular contributors reaching for their early war minis in the process. Jim Graham starts things off with a general background and a whole lot of tanks to choose from, then Mark Latham takes us to the Cthulhu Campaign which… oh, apologies, this isn’t some Nazi weird war offering related to the theme, it’s an article which expands on the author’s Broken Legions rules that brings in the Cthulhu mythos! Back to the theme, Neil Smith and Dom Sore recreate the Battle on the Escaut in Chain of Command and Dom then flips systems and talks about fighting Dunkirk with the Bolt Action rules. Away from WWII Dave Tuck and Malc Johnston take Lion Rampant to a different level with siege rules. As Lion Rampant’s Second Edition was just released it’s worth hitting up the vault for some more articles about the game. Don’t forget that LR2 isn’t drastically changed, just refined, so our old LR content will still be relevant. Search the Vault for more Lion Rampant goodies… or check out these articles we’ve dug out for you: Wargames Illustrated 342 - April 2016 Eagle Rampant – it’s medieval Napoleonic gaming! Confused? Intrigued? Check out this article from a curiously named guest contributor which features some Perry gaming action and the usual visual spectacle that brings on the tabletop. Wargames Illustrated 330 - April 2015 Italian Condotta armies for Lion Rampant by the game’s designer Dan Mersey. Wargames Illustrated 328 - February 2015 Wi Editor Dan builds a retinue for the game in this project showcase and takes them to the tabletop. Wargames Illustrated 323 - September 2014 Where it all started! The game’s creator talks about his then-new release. These articles (and many more which can be found with a ‘Lion Rampant’ search) show that there’s much to be enjoyed in the Vault if you play some of the ‘bigger’ wargames as we get regular contributions for them. Just search out your system of choice and see what variants, reports, showcases, and opinion pieces you can find! Wargames Illustrated 298 - August 2012 Just one more issue to look at this
