The Wargames Illustrated team dig through the Vault to bring you some latest issue tie-ins. The theme of the next magazine (September 2021, Wi405) is ‘What if?’, it’s a subject we have visited, re-visited, then visited again numerous times over the years in Wi, leaving us, or rather you, with an embarrassment of riches to look for in The Vault. Having said that, we’ll confine ourselves here to nudging you towards issues that receive an honourable mention in our Welcome to ‘What If’s’ article from Wi405. December 2019 - Wi386 We will kick off our peak into these relatively recent files in The Vault here by pointing you in the direction of that most classic of ‘What if?’ classics: Operation Sea Lion, featured in the pages of Wi many times over the years, but most recently in December 2019. In A Busy Night in Little 'Appens, Britain’s most famous defenders of the realm: Captain Mainwaring, Lance Corporal Jones, Private Pike and co. are called on to tackle a section of German Paratroopers who are up to no good on the quiet lanes of Little Happens. Whilst you’re there take a break from ‘What ifing’ and do yourself a favour by checking out the making of an excellent 15mm gaming table in the form of Andy Tomlinson’s Battle of Antietam demo board, as seen on pages 24 – 30 of this magazine. August 2019 - Wi382 When England Slept is a fine article that formed part of our Invasions of Britain theme for this issue. Steve Blease takes a look at Victorian and Edwardian ‘invasion fiction’ (as it came to be known), with a focus on the famous but fictional Battle of Dorking. Other ‘What if?’ British invasions also feature in this magazine, including a Battle of Bosworth, 1745 (!?) February 2016 - Wi340 This issue includes an article by Charles Grant Junior in which he talks about the adventures of his illustrious father in developing and playing out “imagi-nation” wargames over the decades. This whole magazine features a tempting delight of ‘What if?’ gaming, including British Intervention Force action i.e. Her Majesty’s soldiers meddling in the American Civil War, and World War One action on the US/Mexican border.
