Take a tour through the Vault and read some classic Wi articles. Under no circumstances should you forget to peek into the Vault this month; there’s a £1,000 voucher for wargaming supplies inside … APRIL FOOL! Ah, what an elaborate prank. Sorry, no voucher (beyond the wonderful discounts you do get each month as WiPrime Members) but there is a bevy of back issue brilliance in the Vault. Hopefully, that makes up for it. We’re keeping things relatively current this month and going back five, ten, and 15 years. Wargames Illustrated 366 - April 2018 An odd pairing of themes from five years ago - The Thirty Years’ War and Air War - but it works! Keen-eyed readers will notice we weren’t great on our possessive apostrophes when it came to the featured conflict but that hopefully won’t be too upsetting as you navigate your way through this issue. Wi regular Jim Graham provides the Thirty Years’ War introduction with a look at the conflict’s armies; this will be a very useful piece for anyone who has ordered Warlord’s new Epic Pike & Shotte figures. With the Air war intro Jim Graham’s back for a double bill - he looks at aircraft and ground support in the Great War and his article has some cracking photos alongside a lot of handy information. Blood Red Skies’ release was the reason for the Air War half of this issue’s theme and the game’s designer, Andy Chambers, shows it off. Pete Brown hits on the April Fool idea with his article that presents historical facts alongside historical fiction and challenges the reader to work out which is which. There’s a battlemats comparison that shows how far things have come from the hernia-inducing heavy boards of earlier decades but also how much mats have since improved over another five years. Does 54mm WWI skirmish battling sound intriguing? Of course it does! Check out ‘Going Large in the Great War’ for a focused point from the Battle of Oppy Wood, 1917. To finish things off there’s a look at our Salute participation table for that year. If you’re coming to Salute 2023 then we’ve got a magnificent Billhooks table ready for you to do battle over, under the watchful eye of the game’s author, Andy Callan. Check it out on our YouTube channel if you want a preview! Wargames Illustrated 306 - April 2013 The Vietnam War is a truly fascinating conflict, and this issue has some fine articles on the subject for its theme. Battlefront’s Tour of Duty expansion for Flames of War means that company-scale battles can be examined rather than the small jungle-based skirmishes that are so iconic. Guest Editor Phil Yates
