April rolled around quickly, didn’t it? This is a month that is always clearly timestamped in our old issues by the presence of pre-Salute adverts and build-up. With Salute cancelled this year it makes April a slightly melancholy time for those in the UK wargaming scene but with a hint of relief on the side for us at Wi; we don’t have to frantically get ourselves ready to run our stand and cover the show! We will endeavour to bring some brightness to your Saluteless and (at least in the UK) currently dreary, windswept, and rain lashed days with an examination of past issues of Wi where there is a great deal of wargaming goodness to enjoy! Wargames Illustrated 354 - April 2017 Five years ago Wi was focused on Sir Arthur Wellesley with our ‘Iron Duke’ theme. Wellington's broad history was examined; we put his early experiences in India under the microscope with an article from regular contributor Jim Graham and another about his Maratha adversaries there from another regular, Pete Brown; Steve Wood took in Waterloo; while Neil Smith focused on Wellington’s men, fondly called ‘the scum of the earth’ by the man himself. In non-Wellington articles Graham Davey - currently putting the finishing touches to his new WWII game, 02 Hundred Hours, which we are hoping to review very soon - gives us a first look at Test of Honour, his still popular samurai skirmish game. If spectacle is your wargaming preference then the Battle of Foteviken, with its impressive coastal board and ships, is for you. Wargames Illustrated 294 - April 2012 There are tanks, tanks, and more tanks as this issue from ten years ago looks at Flames of War’s Blood, Guts, and Glory expansion. ‘Clash of Steel’ showcases four armies that are heavy on the armour while ‘Tank Scrap’ is an article that does as the name suggests, and has made us instantly want to turf out our FoW forces! The 14th Century had its own brand of tanks; they were called the Teutonic Knights and Neil Smith looks at this religious military order in a splendid looking article. Painter Matt Parkes begins his ‘Paints’ series with an introduction to the basics in this issue. There are many other Matt Parkes Paints articles in future issues of Wi to enjoy as well so be sure to go searching if this leaves you hungry for more. Another first part, this time in a trilogy, is Kevin Jones’ article on Imperial Japan. This is a great series for anyone who fancies dipping into a new period and place with their army building or just expanding existing knowledge. Wargames Illustrated 175 - April 2002 Travel back 20
