Dan: Since my last Editor's Exploits, the Wargames Illustrated team have suffered a terrible loss in the form of the sudden but peaceful death of Duncan Macfarlane. Duncan was the founder of both the Miniature Wargames and (four years later) Wargames Illustrated magazines. Yesterday was his funeral and (within government restrictions) was well attended by guests from the wargames community. Speeches from Rich Clarke (Too Fat Lardies), John Stallard (Warlord Games CEO), and Peter Dennis (Illustrator) amongst others expressed a sense of what Duncan had offered to the hobby he loved over the years. John Stallard mentioned what Bryan Ansell told - how in the early 80s he was chastised at a convention by an old school wargamer (wearing shirt and tie) for "having fun" whilst gaming - Duncan helped change that approach through his magazines, conventions, and general attitude to playing wargames. I pay tribute to my friend Duncan in the August issue of Wargames Illustrated magazine, but prior to that, I would like to share with you here some of the work he became famous for - the photographs in Wargames Illustrated magazine - specifically some of his early front cover shots. All taken with 'one shot' (after an average two-hour set-up!) in the 1980s.
